Even people who love perfume and can nose their way around a perfume department blindfolded can feel your pain. Buying perfume is not easy and there are actually several factors you don’t even know yet that are conspiring to make it even more difficult. Read more »

Why do fragrances/perfumes contain alcohol?

Alcohol makes the fragrance emanate from your skin.  It helps the fragrance travel through the air.  Without alcohol, you would be the only person who knew you were wearing any fragrance at all.

What is the difference between Perfume, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, etc?

What is the difference between?

  1. Perfume
  2. Eau de Parfum
  3. Eau deToilette
  4. Eau de Cologne
  5. Compound
  6. Cologne (Men’s)
  7. Pheromones

Perfume (Extract)
Most highly concentrated form of fragrance, containing a high percentage of perfume compounds (about 20-50%), it is considered the strongest.  This means that not only do you need to use less, but also that the fragrance lasts longer.

EAU DE PARFUM (EDP)
This is lighter than Perfume, with an 8-15% concentration of perfume, and so is less expensive but still has long lasting characteristics.

EAU DE TOILETTE (EDT)
This is a lighter more delicate fragrance, with a 4-8% concentration of perfume, and is therefore most suited to everyday use.  It is normally less expensive than Eau de Parfum.

EAU DE COLOGNE (EDC) or Perfume (Women’s)
This is often referred to as Cologne with A light form of specific fragrance with a relatively low concentration of perfume compound (about 3%) in an alcohol water base. The term is derived from Eau de Cologne, one of the original fragrance compositions

Compound
Term used in the industry for the concentrated perfume or flavor mixture before it is diluted or used in products.

Cologne (Men’s)
More concentrated than the women’s cologne (about 5-8%). It is similar to the strength of a women’s Eau de Toilette.  Men’s After Shave by comparison will be somewhat lighter (about 3-5%).

Pheromones
Chemicals produced by living organisms and are used to transmit messages to other member of the same species. Nature has provided them so that we can communicate rapidly and efficiently by means of scents. The secret to pheromones lies in their discreet strength and the way they affect our personal environment.
